Suspect named in Santa Monica rampage that left four dead, one gravely injured

A suspect has been identified in the shooting rampage that left four people dead and one gravely injured Friday in various locations around Santa Monica, California and culminated on Santa Monica College Campus.
One of those dead was the alleged shooter, whom the Los Angeles Times has identified as John Zawahri, citing five law enforcement sources in Los Angeles and Washington. Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said at a press conference Saturday that the shooter was 23-years-old on Friday, and would have turned 24 on Saturday. She declined to identify him at this point, saying the family had not yet been notified.
Seabrooks described the suspect as “a cowardly murderer.”

The incident began around 11:50 Pacific Time on Friday, at a house near Kansas Avenue and Yorkshire Avenue. Santa Monica Fire Department Chief Scott Ferguson said at the press conference Saturday that the approximately “thousand square foot residence” was “engulfed” in flames. Two bodies were discovered on the preliminary sweep and Ferguson said it was clear at that point that they would not be able to resuscitate the victims.
Ferguson said he could not release the information about how the two persons in the house had died, whether they been shot or killed by the fire. The fire, he said, is “under investigation,” but that it “doesn’t appear an accelerant was used” to ignite the fire.
Sources told the L.A. Times that the two victims were the alleged shooter’s father and brother. Seabrooks confirmed a “familial” connection to the house, but could not confirm the victims.
The alleged shooter then flagged down a car and forced the female shooter at gunpoint to drive him to nearby Santa Monica College. Seabrooks said he told the driver he would kill her, and she was “obviously terrified.” She drove him to the College and then left when given the opportunity.
He fired several shots in the neighborhood of the house. During the drive, he allegedly fired at a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, one of the public buses.

Vagina Facts: 10 Things You May Not Know About Lady Parts

This area is gorgeously complicated and full of surprises. Here are just a few.
1. During arousal, your lady parts act like his man parts. You know about the clitoris "joy button" becoming more, um, button-y, but you may not be aware that the labia minora also contain erectile tissue that gets slightly stiffer when things heat up. The reasons for this go back to when you were a fetus with androgynous parts. "We all start out with the same tissues in that area," says Shelly Holmstrom, MD, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Florida at Tampa.
2. Even the most mild-mannered among us have something in common with sharks. Vaginal lubricant and shark liver oil both contain an organic compound called squalene. Squalene derived from sharks is sometimes added to moisturizers and skin creams, where it acts as an emollient.
3. Silicone lubricants may be right for you but not for your toys. Gynecologists like Chicago's Lauren Streicher, MD, recommend silicone-based lubricants over water-based ones because they feel more natural, last much longer and don't usually contain propylene glycol, which is a potential irritant. However, silicone lubricant can compromise the integrity of vibrators and other sex toys that also contain silicone, and can cause them to change shape or break down
4. Menstrual blood may be a lifesaver. For years, scientists have been trying to find a medically helpful use for menstrual blood, which contains stem cells that have the ability to regenerate. The latest, most exciting research: cells from this all-too-readily-available blood are currently being tested to see if they can help patients with heart failure.
5. Shaving and waxing the bikini area can cause micro-trauma -- even when it doesn't hurt. The process of hair removal causes tiny nicks and abrasions that can allow bacteria to get under the skin and cause infections, explains Susan Taylor, MD, a Philadelphia-based dermatologist and the author of Brown Skin. The micro-trauma caused by Brazilian waxes, especially, can boost the risk of a pox-like viral infection called molluscum contagiosum, suggests a small study published online in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. Don't share razors—and consider holding off sexual contact until a day or two after a wax (longer if you have visible bumps or wounds).
6. Sex can also cause micro-trauma -- even when it feels great. A normal, enjoyable bout of sex can still result in small scrapes or tears to the internal tissue, says Holmstrom. "Unfortunately for us, that’s why women are so much more likely than straight men to get STIs," she says. Condoms are your best protection against STIs (besides abstinence, obviously), but as fans of the show Girls know, even they aren't foolproof against HPV and genital ulcers, which can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.
7. Sweating down there isn't only normal; it provides a necessary function. Just below the skin of the labia and clitoral hood are hundreds of tiny glands that secrete oil and sweat, says Holmstrom. This can protect your delicate areas from friction and overheating.
8. It's normal for premenopausal women to have daily discharge. The vagina can produce an average of a teaspoon of discharge a day, and it's often white or transparent and odorless. Just before the ovulation phase of your menstrual cycle, this discharge will probably be more watery and elastic, and there will seem to be much more of it. If it bothers you, try a sanitary pad (and if you notice anything unusual -- odor, discomfort, etc. -- talk to your doctor).
9. Hair down there really does tend to be the same color as hair up there, but it will never be as long. The growth phase of pubic hair is much shorter than that of hair on your head, says Taylor. "It's not programmed to grow that long," she says -- and even if it were, friction from undergarments and ordinary movement causes frequent breakage.
10. Just as petals range in size from buttercup to orchid ...the length of the inner labia, or labia minora, can be between 3/4 inch and 2 1/3 inch (a much broader range than most of us realize), according to a classic study published in the early 1900s in the journal American Gynecology, and every gynecologist we've ever talked to says there's no good medical, hygienic or aesthetic reason to be self-conscious of yours. Really.

Staten Island New Business: Fountain of Youth Rx Medical Spa in Annadale

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- After launching a successful medical spa in Westchester, Dr. David P. Suarez wanted to see if there was a market for such a business in his hometown of Staten Island.

"An opportunity came in Staten Island where my best friend from Tottenville High School, Larry Codner, (who owns Richmond Rehabilitation Center in New Dorp), had space in his office," said Suarez, a cosmetic surgeon who attended medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University.
After renting space two days a week from Codner, he witnessed a strong demand among Staten Islanders "to stay young looking and healthy," so he sought out his own location and opened Fountain of Youth Rx Medical Spa in Annadale.
"There was a market here that I couldn't believe. In the six weeks I had my business open in Westchester I had four patients. In the same time period on Staten Island I had 20 patients, and my schedule was fully booked," he said. "Staten Island is very visual; there is a high importance placed on how people look here."

While the spa offers a range of non-surgical cosmetic services, Suarez completed his medical training with a specialty in cosmetic surgery, and completed over 1,200 cosmetic surgery procedures in Marion Hospital, in Marion, Ind.
"Our focus at Fountain of Youth Rx Medical Spa is to treat the whole person -- mind body and spirit," said Suarez. "We do everything that promotes health and beauty. When you come here, you leave your stress at the door."
Products and services:

Fountain of Youth Rx Medical Spa focuses on non-surgical enhancement procedures. Services include bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, "which uses natural hormones to replace the hormones that your body doesn't produce at those rates anymore to give you an anti-aging feel," he said.
Fountain of Youth Rx Medical Spa also offers physician-directed weight reduction, and all types of skin treatments.
"We offer a free skin rejuvenation evaluation. We treat pigmented legions, veins, photo or sun damage, wrinkles, acne and hair removal. We offer prescription medication, as well as home care treatments for the skin. We also do injectables, Botox, Dermafillers and more."
Among the other services offered are: laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation, microdermabrasion and skin tightening.

Growth strategy

To grow the business, Suarez has a strategic plan that consists of a lot of grassroots marketing. "Anyone who grew up on Staten Island or has a business on Staten Island wants to help each other out," he said. "There is also a huge need for this type of business on Staten Island. Just being in the area, and having a very viable office on Hylan Boulevard will help."
He also hopes to grow his client base through referrals, and will be offering specials to patients for referring new customers.

Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery Turns to Palomar for New Aesthetic System

Lake Forest, IL (PRWEB) May 28, 2013
Doctor Anthony Terrasse, founder of Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery and Erase MediSpa, has been motivated by the desire to achieve high patient satisfaction since opening his practice twenty years ago and since then he has quietly crafted one of the premier practices along Chicago’s North Shore. Inspired by beauty and form, Dr. Terrasse is recognized both locally and nationally and has repeatedly been named a top plastic surgeon in numerous outlets, including U.S. News & World Report.
His practice uses the most advanced technology available in the marketplace for aesthetic surgery to perform procedures such as skin rejuvenation and tightening to hair removal and this month Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery turned to Palomar Medical Technologies, a global leader in laser- and light-based systems for aesthetic treatments, based in Burlington, MA, for its laser tools. The practice now uses the Palomar Icon™ Aesthetic System and its Emerge™ Fractional Laser for skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, photofacials and hair removal.
“Palomar’s laser tool hands down offers the most advanced, researched-based technology in the field of aesthetic surgery,” said Dr. Terrasse. By using Palomar’s system, I am able to address a full spectrum of my patients' aesthetic needs.”
When asked the best advice for an individual considering a laser treatment, Dr. Terrasse advises consumers to seek out a certified plastic surgeon with experience in aesthetic plastic surgery as well as advanced skin care as opposed to an individual who might offer limited services and whose medical training and interests lie in a different area of medicine.
When he is not in the office taking care of patients, Dr. Terrasse can be found giving lectures on aesthetic surgery and skin care at women’s seminars as well as at hospital and community-based events.

New fashion trend: Men remove “hobbit” hair from their feet with laser

The so-called “hobbit feet” are treated with laser, and number of patients who subjected to the treatment, which costs GBP 700 (EUR 830), in one London based clinic, has doubled in the past year.
Dr Michael Prager said that he has at least two costumers every day, who say that they do not want to look like hobbits from the JRR Tolkien books with feet covered in hair.
“The fashion has changed. Men increasingly uncover their feet so they want them to look good. I believe that soon will come the trend of complete leg shavings for men also,” concluded dr. Michael Prager.

Does It Really Do That? No No Hair Removal System

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Many people struggle with unwanted hair. Lots of women get sick of shaving all the time and waxing or bleaching can be very irritating to your skin.
The No No Hair Removal System claims to give you no hair with no pain and no hassle.
But does it really do that?
It’s one of the more expensive products we’ve tested, and the cost is the thing that has many of our viewers hesitant before they plunk down their money and give it a try.

The Latest Male Beauty Craze: Toe Hair Removal

As a woman, I feel like I'm constantly fighting a battle with unwanted hair—on my legs, my arms, my brows, my upper lip, my hooha…need I go on?

And, with the rise of manscaping, guys are finally getting a little taste of how much work it takes to keep all that fuzz in check. In fact, some of them have taken the quest for de-furring one step further, effectively creating a new beauty treatment trend for guys: Toe hair removal.

According to the Daily Mail, guys are increasingly ridding their little piggies of hair, undergoing about eight laser treatments—and shelling out $1,000—to do so. The craze is currently sweeping London and I imagine it will make its way stateside soon enough.

But, honestly, it is really necessary? How often do you really see, or pay attention to, a guy's feet? And can't they just shave it off? That grand could be better spent, IMHO.

Though, I'm probably biased: My guy's toes rival those of Tolkien's hobbits. He's got curlicues of hair on his feet—which his friends are kind enough to make fun of—but I really, truly don't find them gross. (I guess that's love?)

However, in the interest of full disclosure, I, too, have toe hair, which I shave off when I remember to. My guy's never noticed it (or at least has never said anything), so I really don't think it's that big of a deal.

Because, seriously, there are more important things to worry about than a little toe hair, right?
